(NEW YORK CITY.) Holmes, John Bute. Map of Bayard's East Farm, accurately made from old maps, (not in Register's Office,) From Conveyances on Record from Nicholas Bayard, Sheriffs Sales, Lottery Lots &c. &c. Large format hand-colored lithographed plat map, backed on linen and edged with red silk, as issued. 36x22 inches sheet size; soft creases, paper quite friable, with some chipping and loss, especially around the bottom edge, selvage lacking in places. sold as is. New York, September 1869

  • Notes: Holme's maps reflect an enduring fascination with Manhattan's history, and specifically with the relationship between its former bucolic state and later regimented urban grid. The maps in his "Conveyancing" series address that duality by layering historic topographical data with then-current street and plot information. The effect is fascinating and handsome. See "John Bute Holmes, surveyor and polygamist", MCNY Blog; see also, Stokes, Iconography, Chronology: Addenda, 64-g and 64-h.

This map covers Little Italy and part of Soho, bounded by Broadway, Prince, Bowery, and Bayard. The area was substantially changed by the development of Canal Street and the Manhattan Bridge.
