(NEW YORK CITY.) Hutchings, John. Origin of Steam Navigation. "Honor to Whom Honor is Due." a View of Collect Pond and its Vicinity, in the City of New York in 1793. On which Pond, the first boat, propelled by paddle wheels screw-propellers, constructed by John Fitch, six years before Robert Fulton made trial of his boat upon the River Seine, in France, and ten years prior to his putting into opperation his boat "Clermont" in New York; with a representation of the boat and its machinery, on the Collect pond. Large hand-colored lithograph of the original Collect Pond with a contemporary street grid overlaid 20 3/4x17 1/4 inches sheet size, wide margins; light age toning, short edge nicks and closures. Williamsburgh, NY, 1846

  • Notes: An illustrated tribute to the inventors of the steam-engine boat: "The original idea and mechanical genius of John Fitch"; "the perseverance and indefatigable attention to the use of steam of Robert Fulton"; and the "wealth exalted and estimable character of Robert R. Livingston". The text by John Hutchings recounts his experience as an on-board assistant to the pioneering men while a young man.

Copies of a similarly titled, dated, and designed lithograph are seen generally available on the market; however, this variant with a much larger map is found far less frequently. Peters, page 282.
