  • Notes: Construction for the Holland Tunnel connecting lower Manhattan with Jersey City began in 1920, and it opened to automobile traffic in 1927. The tunnel''s original engineer and namesake Clifford Milburn Holland died in 1924. It was completed under the supervision of Ole Singstad, who designed the innovative ventilation system. Featured in this collection are 4 complete sets of bound printed contract drawings (Contracts #6, 7, 13, and 14) in 8 volumes from 1924 and 1925. Also included 10 volumes of reports of the Bridge and Tunnel Commission (some from New York and some from New Jersey) dated 1920 through 1926. 6 of these reports are in published form, and 4 of them are pre-publication drafts in mimeograph form, with approximately 60 original photographs and numerous folding plans bound in. The 1923 draft of the New Jersey commission''s report bears the original signature of C.M. Holland as chief engineer. The 1924 New Jersey report is present in both mimeograph and printed form; the printed report has the original transmittal letter laid in.
