(NEW YORK CITY.) Longworth, David. This actual map and comparative plans showing 88 years growth of the city of New York.

SUPERB COPY OF AN UNCOMMON MANHATTAN MAP, INSCRIBED TO LAFAYETTE (NEW YORK CITY.) Longworth, David. This actual map and comparative plans showing 88 years growth of the city of New York. Hand-colored engraved roll map of lower Manhattan, mounted on wood dowels. 545x530 mm sheet size; shellac lightly yellowed, lacking a small portion of green silk edge, neat repairs to dowels, in excellent condition for a wall map. Inscribed on verso: "To Gen. La Fayette / from T. Longworth, New York / May 13th. 1826". New York: Thos. Longworth, 1825

  • Notes: lafayette's record of his most famous new york monument. In the summer of 1824 the Marquis de Lafayette undertook a year-long journey around the United States, celebrating the revolution's 50th anniversary. Along the way he was presented with gifts and monuments in his honor. Among the public spaces dedicated to the Marquis was Lafayette Place in lower Manhattan (now Lafayette Street), so named by John Jacob Astor in 1825. Thus, Thomas Longworth's map of the same year might be the first to make note of this change, and would have made an appropriate gift to Lafayette on the occasion.

This is the rarer 1825 edition of the Longworth map of lower Manhattan, originally published in 1817. Haskell records one copy, at NYPL. Haskell, Manhattan Maps, 691.
