(NEW YORK CITY.) New York City Tunnel Authority. Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel General Plan, Profile and Cross Section.

(NEW YORK CITY.) New York City Tunnel Authority. Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel General Plan, Profile and Cross Section. Hand-colored print on heavy backing board, 565 x 1725 mm. Very minor marginal wear and barely visible soiling, tape and related markings on verso. [New York], 18 January 1941

  • Notes: An attractive presentation display of the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, created just after the start of construction. The tunnel's planned route from Battery Park in Manhattan under the East River to Brooklyn is depicted, as well as elevations of both tubes for their complete routes, and a typical cross-section. Period cars and trucks are shown in the cross-section.

The groundbreaking for this project occurred in October 1940, and the tunnel was opened to traffic in May 1950. It remains the longest underwater vehicular tunnel in the United States. The chief engineer on this project, Ole Singstad, was a Norwegian-American civil engineer who helped build all four of New York City's toll tunnels.

This striking image, more than five feet in width, is an important document of New York City's infrastructure.
