(NEW YORK GANGSTERS )
Mug shots of the notorious Albert Anastasia, Dutch Schultz, and Louis "Lepke" Buchalter. Silver prints, 2 1/2x4 3/4 inches (6.3x12 cm.), with the Police Department of New York hand stamp and handwritten notations on verso. 1931-1936

  • Notes: From the files of Brooklyn Assistant District Attorney Burton Turkus, who prosecuted Murder Inc. cases; to organized crime historian and collector John Binder.

Albert Anastasia (a.k.a. Umberto Anastasio) was boss of what is now called the Gambino Crime Family, one of New York City's five "families," from 1951-1957. Earlier he led Murder Inc., a gang of ruthless contract killers, and was sometimes referred to as the "Mad Hatter" or the "Lord High Executioner."

Schultz, who was once declared Public Enemy #1 by the FBI, made his fortune in organized crime-related activities such as bootlegging alcohol and the numbers racket. Buchalter was a Jewish-American gang leader associated with Murder Inc.
