(NEW YORK.) Group of mammoth photographic views of early Shelter Island. Albumen prints, various sizes as listed; all but one backed with muslin at an early date and unmounted, with no captions on verso; generally minimal wear. Laid into modern mats. Shelter Island, NY, circa 1890s

  • Notes: These views depict Shelter Island, nestled between the two forks of Long Island's eastern end. At the time these photographs were taken, Shelter Island had a population of about 1,000 and was in the early phase of its prominence as a summer resort. Includes:

"West Neck Park, Shelter Island, N.Y." (the only one of these captioned in the negative), 15¾ x 20¾ inches. A coast view from the water, with a windmill prominently featured.

Untitled view, 9¼ x 26½ inches in two sheets, of the same coastline from a different perspective, with the same windmill at center, and a rowboat in foreground.

Untitled inland view, 15 x 40½ inches on two sheets, showing a dirt road intersection, with a sign reading "West Neck Ave.," and 3 pedestrians in frame, with same buildings and windmill as in the first two images, but shot from behind.

Untitled view of a different stretch of coastline, showing low bluffs, 11¾ x 21 inches. Presumed to be Shelter Island though we have not identified the location.

Untitled view, 16½ x 21 inches, of a view across a small harbor, with a horse-drawn carriage in foreground. Presumed to be Shelter Island though we have not identified the location.

"View of Manhanset House," 7¾ x 17 inches, on original plain mount, with printed label bearing extensive caption text on verso; moderate wear to mount; shows an early Shelter Island resort hotel.
