  • Notes: Most notable in this lot is a juvenile poem illustrated with a pencil and watercolor drawing, done by "H.L. Edwards 11 yr old . . . by the request of my father''s friend Mr. L.D. Cook." This epic work of literature is worth transcribing in full: "When I was a boy about eight years old / I had a good father and he was very bold / He went on an island, as safe as a hair / And there alone he killed a bear / His crew had fled for they did not have skill / But my father was brave and so he stood still / The bear sprung at him with his eyes glistning like cristle / And my father shot him with a large bear pistol." 6 1/4 x 9 3/4 inches; Sag Harbor, NY, 21 September 1851.
