(NEW YORK--LONG ISLAND.) Howell, George Rogers. The Early History of Southampton, L.I., New York.

MANUSCRIPT HISTORY OF SOUTHAMPTON (NEW YORK--LONG ISLAND.) Howell, George Rogers. The Early History of Southampton, L.I., New York. Autograph Manuscript Signed. 218 pages, erratically paginated. 8vo, 1/2 morocco, backstrip worn, joints splitting; lithograph titled "Presbyterian Church Southampton L.I. built 1707" glued to front free endpaper, final leaf cut out (apparently blank); bookplate of author on front pastedown. With 8 leaves of related manuscript material: inserted pages, transcribed documents, etc. Southampton, NY, ca. 1866

  • Notes: the original manuscript of the seminal history of new york's earliest english settlement. Southampton was settled in 1640, but no history of the town was published until this classic work was issued in 1866. The text of chapters I through X appears to be the final manuscript used by the printers for the 1866 first edition, but the later chapters include additional genealogical data and tables not found in the published work, as well as a different set of appendices.
  • Condition: All items are offered for sale subject to Swann Galleries' standard terms and conditions of sale, which are published in our catalogues.
