(NEW YORK--NIAGARA.) Elliot, Arthur. Leaves from his illustrated scrapbook of a Niagara Falls visit.

(NEW YORK--NIAGARA.) Elliot, Arthur. Leaves from his illustrated scrapbook of a Niagara Falls visit. 8 original watercolors and drawings, 9 albumen photographs, and 7 pieces of printed ephemera, all laid down on 6 scrapbook leaves (14 x 11 inches) with Elliot's annotation; minor chipping to margins scarcely affecting text or attachments. New York and Niagara Falls, May [1881?]

  • Notes: Arthur Elliot was an English artist who toured the United States and Canada in 1881-82. Other portions of his scrapbooks are held by Library and Archives Canada, and by Historic New England. These pages document his arrival in New York City and his visit to Niagara Falls. Highlights include a watercolor of a Manhattan hack driver (contrasted with his more dignified London counterpart), three somewhat sympathetic portraits of African-American porters and waiters, and two vivid watercolors of the moonlit falls. A small ink sketch of his Canadian Falls guide and two women in waterproof dresses is drawn directly on the scrapbook page. The descriptive text is extensive in places and approaches the quality of a good travel diary. Provenance: Elliot's papers were dispersed at a Sotheby's London sale on 13 June 1961. This group was sold by the Old Print Shop to Karl Schmutzler, 1968.
