(NEW YORK) "The Sidewalks of New York."

(NEW YORK)
"The Sidewalks of New York." With an introductory text, and more than 100 dynamic photographs by P. S. Dauwalter of Big Apple landmarks, including Penn Station, the Empire State Building, Tiffany's, Bonwit Teller, Central Park, aerial views of midtown, and much more. Ferrotyped silver prints, 10x8 inches (25.4x20.3 cm.) and the reverse, linen backed, with a typewritten caption affixed to verso as well as Dauwalter's hand stamp. Thick oblong 4to, leatherette, bolted. Circa 1940

  • Notes: Dauwalter, a commercial photographer, selected and produced this panoramic group of photographs. His snappy text, high level of photographic proficiency, and familiarity with New York folklore combine to make this a unique period object.

The introductory text provides requisite background information about New York''s social history, from colonial times to World War II period. It is chock-a-block with factoids about Manhattan and, even today, would be interesting to refer to on a walking tour.

The city that never sleeps is revealed as a majestic, skyscraper- dominated landscape in which New Yorkers have the option of enjoying a dazzling night life, walking in a bucolic park (replete with its own zoo), or shopping at high-end emporiums. Scenes in which streets are drenched in dramatic, late afternoon light depict well-dressed office workers and executives, some of whom are undoubtedly on their way to Penn Station, whose main concourse was modeled after the Baths of Diocletian in Rome.
