  • Notes: Clarke served on the New York Supreme Court from 1900 to 1926. This collection includes several letters relating to his initial appointment by Theodore Roosevelt, then governor of New York. Also a manuscript retained copy of a 1908 letter from Clarke to Roosevelt beginning "Dear Theodore: Ten years ago this day we celebrated your birthday on a train in central New York while you were conducting that brilliant campaign in which you won for yourself the governorship," and typescript eulogies of Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt prepared for "Gentlemen of the Bar."
