  • Notes: Howard Carroll (1854-1916) was raised in Albany, NY and became a journalist for the New York Times. In 1883, he married Caroline Starin, daughter of former Congressman John Henry Starin (1825-1909), a land developer and steamship transportation mogul. Carroll became involved in the Starin family business, served as Brigadier General in the New York militia, and was president of the Sicilian Asphalt Paving Company. This lot includes:

    A condolence letter on the death of John Starin sent by New York Chamber of Commerce head J. Edward Simmons, 1909.

    A letter proposing a buyout of the Metropolitan Transit Railway Company of New York City, 1904.

    A folder of deeds and correspondence relating to the sale of transportation steamships, 1886-1900.

    A folder relating to the Starin dock properties on the north shore of Staten Island, 1909-1919.

    3 agreements relating to the Sicilian Asphalt Paving Company and city paving work, 1890-1891.

    A folder relating to Starin Transportation contracts to transport New York City mail, 1897-1898.

    A folder relating to the Palmetto Club and other family property on Folly Island, South Carolina, 1895-1918, including an 1895 blueprint map of the island.

    A folder on the Carrollcliffe family estate in Tarrytown, NY and the Clifftown Corporation, 1899-1941.

    Manuscript of a journalistic article by Carroll, "A Mississippi Incident," which was published in Colburn's New Monthly in June 1881.

    Galley proofs of Carroll's play "The American Countess," 16 pages.
