  • Notes: Morris Howlett (1873-1939) was a New York stockbroker, and in his spare time a leader in the world of competitive four-in-hand coach racing. Wealthy hobbyists like Howlett would operate horse-drawn coaches on a regular schedule, and compete against each other on their route times while carrying a full load of similarly well-heeled passengers. Howlett's race against James Vanderbilt from New York to Philadelphia and back was a highlight of the 1901 sporting season. This collection of family papers documents the family's life in Newtown and later Huntington, Long Island as well as extensive documentation of his coaching career. The correspondence includes signed notes from John Wanamaker Jr. and Margaret Emerson Vanderbilt. Also included are some papers of his son Eric Morris Howlett (1899-1971), who owned West Hill Farm in Huntington, NY. Inventory upon request.
