NEWMAN, JOHN HENRY; CARDINAL. Two Autograph Letters Signed, "JohnHNewman," The first, to William Monsell, letter of recommendation for Catholic University of Ireland student John Hardman, with a postscript, thanking him for the Florence letter. 2 pages, small 8vo, with integral address leaf; reinforced along all edges, minor loss to lower left corner of address page, remnants of prior mounting along vertical fold of second page, encapsulated (but removable). The second, to Louisa Deane ("My dear Louisa"), expressing worry about the health of his friend [Henry Arthur] Woodgate, sending congratulations on the marriage of her daughter Edith, mentioning that his friend's son is involved in the Anglo-Ashanti wars, with a postscript, written in upper margin of first page, noting that she wrote her letter on the anniversary of Mary's death [Newman's sister, who died January 5, 1828]. Signed vertically in the left margin of first page. 4 pages, 12mo, written on a folded sheet; remnants of hinging at upper edge of pages 2 and 3. With the original envelope. "The Oratory" [Birmingham], 8 November 1863; 7 January 1874

  • Notes: 7 January 1874: ". . . I . . . was half afraid to write--for during the past year I have suffered so much by bad tidings of those who were dear to me. Only on Christmas day my dear friend . . . Mr. Woodgate, had a very bad attack. . . . When trials are coming from all quarters, like shots in a battle, one gets nervous . . . .
    ". . . One of Woodgate''s [sons] is in the Ashantee war--and the savages have got hold of the nice things which his home friends have tenderly sent out to him. . . ."
