NEWSPAPER EXTRA PRINTING OF JEFFERSON'S ACCOUNT (LOUISIANA PURCHASE.) Boston Gazette Extra. -- Monday, Dec. 5, 1803... An Account of Louisiana.
NEWSPAPER EXTRA PRINTING OF JEFFERSON'S ACCOUNT (LOUISIANA PURCHASE.) Boston Gazette Extra. -- Monday, Dec. 5, 1803... An Account of Louisiana. 2-page newspaper extra, the entire issue devoted to Jefferson's Account of Louisiana. Folio, disbound; minor text loss along two edges where trimmed close, other margins wide; 1/4 morocco case. Boston, 5 December 1803
- Notes: the first official description of the louisiana purchase territory. Assembled by Thomas Jefferson and delivered to Congress on 13 November 1803, this newspaper extra printing must certainly be considered one of the first printings available to the mass public. The publication history of this important report is confused at best. The first official printing occurred in pamphlet form, without imprint, but published in Washington. Successive editions, based on this first report, were quickly published in Philadelphia, Baltimore, Providence and many other places over the following year [see next lot]. This newspaper extra printing -- just 3 weeks after Jefferson's report to Congress -- is certainly among the first of the reprints of the Washington, 1803 pamphlet edition. We could find no references to newspaper printings of the Account, nor any other issues appearing at auction. See Wagner-Camp 2b for a bibliography of the pamphlet printings.
