NEWTON, HUEY P. The Black Panther Party, Palestine and Israel, excerpts from a Press Conference on August 26, 1970. Three long mimeographed pages, printed on rectos only. [Oakland], 1970

  • Notes: Minister of Defense Huey P. Newton states the Panther Party line regarding Israel and the Palestinian people by way of making an argument for a separate state for African Americans. Three years after the 1967 War, Israel was still holding onto captured land, a "hot-button" issue that still at the root of Palestinian/Israeli problems. Newton says that Israel must become a secular state that recognizes the rights of Palestinians. He then he draws a parallel between the Palestinian situation and the persecution of the African-Americans by white "American Imperialism": "We have a moral right to choose separatism, to move into a separate state, just as the Jewish people have that moral right."
