NICKOLAS MURAY (1892-1965) A selection of 5 glamorous fashion and entertainment portraits.

NICKOLAS MURAY (1892-1965)
A selection of 5 glamorous fashion and entertainment portraits. The beautifully-lit and stylized images were often meant to showcase a performer as well as the bespoke clothing she was wearing. Silver prints, four of the images measuring approximately 9½x7½ inches (24.1x19.1 cm.), one 10½x13½ inches (26.7x34.3 cm.), the sheets slightly larger, the largest with Muray's blind stamp on recto, and each with his credit stamp, four with a King Features Syndicate stamp, three with the sitter identified in pencil, and two with a full or partial caption label on verso. 1920s

  • Condition: This selection of 5 glamorous studies are in good to very good condition. The images showcase Muray's attention to detail and pose, all of which depict the sitters (and their clothing) with precision, beauty, attention to detail, and light.

The largest image, featuring a figure with her arms resting under her chin, is in nearly excellent condition, with only trace surface imperfections visible upon exceptionally close inspection in strong, raking light. The tones are overall rich and contrasty, with just faint discoloration to the corners, likely related to typical aging.

The remaining images evidence some scattered handling imperfections, consistent with their likely use as press prints. This includes handling creases and small impressions at the edges, most of which are not distracting and only visible upon exceptionally close inspection. The tones are overall rich and consistent, with some very faint discoloration at the edges of one (the full length figure with her arm outstretched).

The versos show very faint soiling, as is typical to work of this type and age. The figures are: Helen Lee, Camille Ponselle, Elsie Lawson, Carmel Myers, and Florence O'Denishawn.
