Niebuhr, Carsten (1733-1815)
Voyage en Arabie et en d'autres Pays de L'Orient.

Switzerland [i.e. Bern]: Chez les Libraires Associés, 1780.

Second edition in French, octavo, two parts in one volume; illustrated with 6 folding maps; 13 full-page plates; and 4 folding plates; bound in contemporary marbled paper in a tree calf design over boards (top of spine chewed at back board junction, with loss mainly confined to board and spine covering; some deckle edges and at least one unopened top edge); 7 7/8 x 4 3/4 in.

Niebuhr's ill-fated Danish Arabia expedition, sponsored by King Frederick V, sailed from Marseilles in January of 1761. From there, the scientific troupe visited Malta, Istanbul, Alexandria, Cairo, Sinai, and Yemen. Sadly, the expedition's philologist, naturalist, artist, surgeon and servant all died along the way. Niebuhr was the only one to survive. He required a stop in Yemen to recover. At that point, he decided it may be best to dress and eat like the people he was visiting. After recovering, he continued on to Bombay, where he stayed for 14 months. Niebuhr is also remembered because his faithful transcriptions of cuneiform tablets allowed scholars to decipher the script and study the ancient civilizations that created this very early system of writing.
