Paul A.M. Dirac

Autograph Letter Signed, "P A M Dirac," to Robert Gumucio,

accepting an invitation to speak at UC San Diego on the subject of antimatter. 1 page, 4to, "Florida State University" stationery; horizontal folds. With the original envelope, addressed in holograph.

Tallahassee, 31 December 1979.

  • Notes: ". . . I would be interested in coming to UCSD to give a historical talk to your group. I might choose a subject such as
"The Road that Led to Antimatter.
"The time when I could come would be rather restricted by my other engagements. This would rule out the coming Spring Quarter. I could probably manage some time in the first half of March or in the Fall, 1980."

On March 20, 1974, Paul Dirac delivered the Loeb lecture at Harvard University entitled, "The Road that Led to Antimatter," describing how many physicists develop theories by first working out a formalism, remarking that antimatter was discovered in the same way: "One first discovers equations . . . . One sees how to apply them to various physical examples. Only when one has become familiar with them does one acquire a feeling for the physical concepts that these equations involve. . . ."
