    Private collection, Connecticut.

Noel Rockmore Davis was born in New York, the son of two successful artists. He was a promising musician but was forced to give up playing due to illness, so he began to pursue painting full time. His talent was recognized early on, and he became acquainted with Raphael Soyer and the Social Realists. At the age of 24, Rockmore was given a show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. During the late 1950s in a controversial move, Rockmore gave up the fame and success in New York to live in New Orleans, and changed his last name from Davis to Rockmore. He became a fixture in the New Orleans art scene, painting portraits of popular musicians and the diverse street life of the French Quarter. Jury No. 1, set in New Orleans, depicts a group of white jurors with vulgar expressions, while the only Black juror's visage is tranquil. This may indicate that the case which the jurors have heard may involve racial justice, and even in this late work, reveal Rockmore's roots in Social Realism. In 1998 the New Orleans Museum of Art held a major retrospective of Rockmore's work.
