NORBERTINE VON BRESSLERN-ROTH Group of 9 gouache and watercolor drawings.

NORBERTINE VON BRESSLERN-ROTH
Group of 9 gouache and watercolor drawings.

Each gouache and watercolor over pencil on heavy, cream wove paper, circa 1920. Each approximately 175x215 mm; 7x8 1/2 inches. Each signed in watercolor, recto. Ex-collection Behring, New York, thence by descent to the current owner.

Bresslern-Roth (1891-1978) studied animal painting under Hans Hajek in Dachau after her initial training in Graz and Vienna. Best known for her depictions of animals, she left behind a legacy of graphic design and commercial work: she frequently illustrated Austrian textbooks, scientific volumes and children's books.

The current designs might have been created for an unrealized edition of Die Nibelungen, an oral myth transcribed in the 13th- century as an epic poem in Middle High German. The tragic story of love, loyalty and revenge has been referred to as a "German Iliad," and images from the Nibelungenlied have been used in the visual and literary arts since the time of its transcription to inspire feelings of German nationalism. Fragments of the nationalist myth were used as propaganda in applications ranging from the Anti-Napoleonic Wars of Liberation to the era of Nazi rule.

Bresslern-Roth made designs for the linoleum cuts illustrating the 1922 edition of Die Nibelungen: Dem Deutschen Volke, by Franz. In the same year that Franz Keim's book was published, Bresslern-Roth received the Golden Medal of the city of Graz. She went on to win the Honorary Prize of the City of Vienna and two Austrian State Medals.
