(NORTH POLE.) Pitt, Moses. A Map of the North-Pole and the Parts Adjoining.

(NORTH POLE.) Pitt, Moses. A Map of the North-Pole and the Parts Adjoining. Double-page engraved map of the North Polar regions. 21 1/2x26 1/4 inches sheet size, wide margins; original outline hand-color; centerfold strengthened, an attractive example. Oxford, 1680

  • Notes: Fine English map of the North Pole with an inset of Nova Zembla. The map is decorated with scenes of an Inuit family dwelling and a whaling hunt. Pitt''s intentions were to produce a 12-volume atlas of the world in the tradition of Jansson and Blaeu but his ambitions were compromised and only 4 volumes were produced. The maps in the atlas were composed from Dutch sources but this map is the only original cartography prepared by Pitt himself.
