(NUCLEAR TESTING)
Two photographs depicting atomic bomb testing, one a rare aerial shot, from Bikini Atoll. 1946.
Silver prints, the first image measuring 17¾x8¾ inches (45.1x22.2 cm.), the sheet 20¼x12 inches (51.4x30.5 cm.), with a numeric notation in ink on recto; the second image measuring 8½x17¼ inches (21.6x43.8 cm.), the sheet slightly larger.

The aerial view of the "Baker Day" underwater explosion in Bikini was made from a radio-controlled drone plane flying 15,000 feet above the crossroads target fleet. Looking down into the center of the great atomic bust, the initial explosion appears as a series of concentric circles.

  • Condition: This pair of vintage photographs depicting atomic bomb testing (1946) are in good to very good condition. The prints are contrasty and finely detailed. Records rather than fine art objects, these prints evidence some slight imperfections related to use, but are also astonishing images in scale and composition, the aerial shot apparently quite rare.

The first image, depicting a view of the explosion from the beach, is lightly ferrotyped, typical to prints of this type, and evidences the slight inconsistencies associated with this process in strong, raking light. The sheet is also rippled across the image area, likely a result of drying. There is a narrow margin at the bottom edge, but not the other three sides, and a small chip can be seen at the upper right corner. Finally, it is also possible to find a couple discrete handling marks, including one at the upper center. But these are not immediately apparent, and do not detract from the presentation.

Similarly, the aerial shot is lightly ferrotyped and evidences the slight inconsistencies associated with this process in strong, raking light. The image also evidences some soft scattered handling marks and small creases, none of which are distracting or immediately apparent. Print verso evidences very faint warming, and this can be faintly seen in the upper right quadrant of the image area, but only with close inspection. This does not detract from the overall impact of the image. The wide white margins are generally clean and bright, with just slight evidence of handling at the far edges. An astonishing perspective on the "Baker Day" tests.

Overall a compelling pair both visually and historically, offering two perspectives on nuclear testing in the United States.
