  • Notes:
Odilon Redon was a leading figure of French Symbolism, known for his dreamlike works and privileging of internal experience and states of mind and mood over outward realism. Deeply influenced by literature, the subconscious, and earlier masters of art history, Redon particularly admired the works of Francisco Goya. In Homage to Goya, he offers a personal tribute that reflects his influence and preoccupation with the work of Goya but within his own unique poetic idiom.
Rather than imitating Goya's stark and singular style, Redon reinterprets his subject, focusing on atmosphere and subtle emotion. This suite reflects Redon's broader artistic philosophy, favoring symbolism and style over literalism, and stands as a thoughtful acknowledgment of Goya's lasting impact on the artist's creative development and imagination.
