Notes: An extraordinary record of an African-American family's odyssey, beginning with an unnamed Cherokee woman, born around 1820 in Cherokee, Alabama; her children Amos and Agnes Jones (born around 1840), their six children, and their descendants down through the 20th century. The consignor has kindly drawn family trees on both sides. Part of the family migrated in the 19th century to Oklahoma (Indian Territory), while part remained in Memphis, Tennessee. Included are: a large tintype of the Cherokee matriarch of the family, a photocopy photo of her two children, as well as early albumen photographs of their children and their children's children. Also included is an exceptional speech on women's rights by Alice Jones (circa 1890) titled "Woman's Lofty Purpose," written shortly before the family's exodus to Oklahoma following a lynching. Other material includes a graduation certificate for Marie Frank Jones, from Fisk University, Signed by all of the faculty including Revered Erasmus Milo Cravath, Fisk's first president. There are numerous other items which fill out the family portrait.
An unusually rich and detailed archive, providing a long and close look at the genesis of an African-American family.
