  • Notes: "... I was sitting in the reception room waiting to see the Secty. Greatly to my surprise Gen. Grant walked in. He said 'I heard you were here & came to thank you for carrying VA for me'... Shortly afterwards I recd a letter requesting me to come to Washington. I went & called at the White House. Grant again expressed his obligation to me & said he wanted to recognize it. I said to him 'I wd as soon hold office under you as under Gen. Washington... The Southern people accused me of supporting you to get office.' He replied that he understood me... "
