ONE OF ONLY 100 COPIES GIROMETTI, GIUSEPPE. Gemme incise dal cavaliere Giuseppe Girometti pubblicate con le Illustrazioni del Cavaliere Pietro Ercole Visconti. 10 engraved plates of mythological characters, engraved after the antique. [8] 9-46, [2] pages. Folio, original printed wrappers, darkened, spine defective but threads still strong. Rome: Tipografia delle belle arti, 1836
- Notes: scarce first edition of 100 copies. presentation copy signed by girometti to Giovanni Battista Niccolini, the writer and dramatist. Niccolini was a friend of Foscolo, professor of history and mythology at Rome and librarian of the Academy of Fine Arts. The work illustrates a series of gems created by Giuseppe Girometti (1750-1851), the most important gem engraver of the first half of the 19th century. Originally published to advertise and sell the gems, the series was eventually purchased by Pope Gregory XVI in 1845 for the Vatican library. A long introduction by Pietro Ercole Visconti, curator of the Capitol Museum and director of antiquities in Rome, gives a history of gem engraving including collectors, and a substantial amount of information on Girometti's life, including his commissions for Canova as well as several popes and dukes. Not in Sinkankas; U.S. copies located in Boston Athenaeum and Berkeley.
