Folio, 319x203 mm, contemporary blind-tooled calf over wooden boards, lacking catches and clasps, rebacked, free endpapers renewed; tiny wormholes through front cover and opening leaves not impairing legibility, general title reinforced along edges on verso, scattered marginalia, contents otherwise generally clean. Signature of G. Chapdock dated 1799 on general title. (Paris): Jean Petit & Jodocus Badius, (1512)

  • Notes: first collected edition in latin of the writings of Origen (circa 185-254), second volume (of 2). The third part contains homilies and the commentary on Romans; the fourth contains Contra Celsum, his defense of Christianity against paganism, and De principiis, "the first systematic exposition of Christian theology" (Sarton). The surviving Greek original texts of Origen's works were not published in their entirety until the 18th century. Adams O-279; Hoffmann III, 25; Sarton I, 317.
    The pastedowns in this copy are vellum leaves from a 13th-/14th-century manuscript of the glossed Decretum of Gratian, with the text of part 2, C.23 q.4 c.1-2 (inside front cover) and C.23 q.4 c.18-23 (inside rear cover).
