ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF MATTHEW HENSON
(HENSON, MATTHEW.) Original photograph of Henson with members of the Peary Polar Expedition at the Strait of Belle Isle, a silver print in 4x3 3/4 inch format; on the original mount, with inked notes on the mount and a manuscript caption, "Cod Fishing in Strait of Belle Isle." Strait of Belle Isle, (1909)
- Notes: The photograph shows Henson with members of the crew of the Roosevelt. It was in 1909 that the notorious debate between Peary and Dr. Frederick Cook arose as to who had reached the Pole. Peary used Battle Harbor, on the caost of the Strait to wire his progress to the New York Times. Cook's claims were later found to be entirely falsified.
