(ORNAMENT.) Washington Irving Art Department. Atowi.

(ORNAMENT.) Washington Irving Art Department. Atowi. 44 pochoir plates. Folio, 1/4 cloth, rear cover lacking, front cover quite worn; contents loose as issued; few small nicks at edges. New York, circa 1919

  • Notes: Curious survival. An art gallery was opened at the Washington Irving High School in the first decade of the 20th century. Apparently, the female students were given classes in design and ornamentation. An article in the New York Times Magazine of 08 June 1919 mentions that the Municipal Art Gallery at the school was showing "work done in the business world by graduates of this school." This portfolio may have grown out of that exposition. It was certainly produced around the time the exhibition took place.
