Italian-born De Mejo (1911-1992) was known for his hybrid style of painting that was at once primitve and satirical, and was influenced by French artist Henri Rousseau. In the mid 1940s, after marrying Italian movie star Alida Valli, he moved to the United States and gained visibility through publication in Architectural Digest, Town and Country, Penthouse, Travel & Leisure and The New York Times.
