Osler, William (1849-1919) The Principles and Practice of Medicine.

Osler, William (1849-1919)
The Principles and Practice of Medicine.

New York: D. Appleton & Co., 1892.

First edition, first issue with the word Gorgias misspelled "Georgias" in the Plato quote on the leaf facing the contents page; thick octavo, library buckram, approximately 30 pages with gouged hole, text still legible, ownership stickers of a modern American physician at front at back on endleaves; 9 x 5 3/4 in.

Haskell Norman describes Osler's work as "one of the most influential textbooks of general medicine ever written." Osler, the father of modern medicine, created the first medical residency program for doctors, an institution now so securely ingrained in our understanding of medical training, one would not be faulted for believing that it dates from the time of Galen. A bibliophile and historian in his own right, Osler composed this textbook of modern medicine while acting as one of the first professors of medicine at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
