OTTLEY, WILLIAM YOUNG. The Italian School of Design; being, A Series of Fac-similes of Original Drawings by the Most Eminent Painters and Sculptors of Italy. 84 aquatint plates with varying shades of bistre and grey after Michelangelo, Del Sarto, da Vinci, Donatello, Poussin, and many others. Large folio, contemporary calf, later rebacked retaining original backstrip, but still quite soiled, rubbed, and darkened; rehinged with buckram and colored tape, occasional foxing, affecting only a few plates heavily. London: Taylor and Hessey for the author, 1823

  • Notes: first edition, large paper copy of this beautiful compedium of Old Master drawings, considered the most accurate facsimiles ever executed before the advent of photography. Many of the original drawings in museums such as the University of Oxford have deteriorated over the years, adding important value to these plates. Levis, p. 55.
