Otto Baumberger 1889-1961 Pkz Ausverkaue 1923 50.25 x 35.5 inches. Wolfsberg, Zurich. Condition A-: minor foxing and creasing at margins Paper. Baumberger, often called "the father of the Swiss Poster," was a prolific artist who by 1922 was already famous for the many advertisements he had created for stores and companies in his hometown of Zurich. Still, it was his work for the elegant men's fashion store PKZ which commissioned a number of exceptional artists, like Ludwig Hohlwein in 1908 , that made him a household name. For his first poster for PKZ, Baumberger drew a skinny tailor with a pointed beard, like a shadow theater character. He reused the character a year later for this poster, where the laughing tailor is announcing some upcoming sales. Also in 1923, Baumberger did two other posters for PKZ one being the famous hyper-realistic coat wherethe title of the poster is the label, as well as the first advertising films for the company. PKZ later went on to commission advertisements from such famous artists as Morach, Matter, Diggelmann and Stoecklin, among others, making PKZ posters some of the classic images of Swiss advertising. ref.
