OTTO MORACH (1887-1973) TAXAMETER. 1920.
50 3/4x35 1/2 inches, 129x90 1/4 cm. Wolfsberg, Zurich.
Condition A-: repaired tears and creases in margins, some slightly into image. Framed.
Morach trained as a school teacher before studying painting in Bern. He went on to study in Paris, Munich, Dresden and Berlin. Back in Switzerland, he joined the Dadaists, Janco, Arp and Picabia exhibiting in the group Das Neue Leben. In addition to his painting, he was also a pioneer of work for puppet theatres with Sophie Taeuber. He designed fewer than ten posters, each with a decidedly modernist approach. His sense of style, with its Art Deco, Cubist and Bauhaus influenced aesthetic, permeates his posters as well as his paintings and puppet design. "Morach provides an unusual [and stylized] view of the city of Zürich. With its many bridges, it represents a centre of activity from which a variety of taxis prepare to take you around the city" (Affiches Automobiles p. 34). The Poster 159, Margadant 237.
