"OUR LADY OF MERCY" IS A SLAVER (PERUVIAN SLAVE DOCUMENTS.) Group of 5 Partly Printed Slave Documents, in Spanish, accomplished in manuscript. Each one page, small folio; each Signed by local officials. Lima, 1801-10
-
Notes: In the earliest document, "Juana," eighteen years "give or take 6 months," a recent arrival on the ship "Our Lady of Mercy" in Valparaiso is sold for 500 pesos. In another, a slave named Francisco, aged 12, a recent arrival on the ship "Avila" is sold for 400 pesos.
The other 3 follow the same pattern. The documents give the name of the slave and on which vessel they arrived in the country. There is additionally an attestation of the slave's health and well-being. A clause of guarantee allows for the return of slaves not as described, with the exception of "heart attack" or "gotacoral" [epilepsy]
