(PAINTINGS.) Harper, F.R. Portrait of Lincoln delivering his first inaugural address. Oil on canvas, 23 3/4 x 17 inches, signed at lower right, in original gilt frame; minor craquelure, 4 skillful early repairs to punctures; tag issued to a previous owner by the Smithsonian Inventory of American Paintings (#9E340003). Np, circa early 20th century

  • Notes: Frank Robert Harper (1876-1948) shows Lincoln standing at the United States Capitol in front of a crowd of dignitaries which apparently includes his predecessor James Buchanan--and also his rival Stephen Douglas, who is rumored to have said afterward "If I can''t be the President, at least I can hold his hat.''
