PAL A LA PLACE CLICHY. Circa 1900.

50 1/2x36 inches. Chardin, Paris.
Condition B+: creases along vertical and horizontal folds. Framed.
Pal worked for just about every possible client who needed advertising, designing posters for all different kinds of shows, brands, trades, or industries. After Jules Cheret, he was the most prolific and most successful poster artist of his era. He could adapt to any commission, being wild and sexy when it pleased the client or taking a more sober and classic approach, as in this poster. His clients were clearly satisfied, as A La Place Clichy continued calling on his services. This simple image of a classy young woman promoting summer fashions is one of at least five posters he designed for the store.
