Garnier was a prosperous distiller in the days when liqueurs were fashionable. He also distributed the prestigious Chartreuse for the monks of the Chartreuse Order, before they were expelled from France in 1903. His factory, a landmark, can still be seen in Enghien, near Paris. This is the first of two posters that Pal designed for the distiller (here in its smaller format) to advertise the company's apricot liqueur. The image is soft, elegant and straightforward, devoid of Pal's more ambitious erotical-kitsch fantasies, which energize some of his other posters.
