PARIS 1900 / OESTERREICH WELTAUSSTELLUNG. 1900. 39.75 x27.25in. S. Czetger, Vienna. Condition C-: restored losses, repaired tears and over painting in image. "As the most famous and respected commercial artist from the Austro-Hungarian Empire living in Paris at the time the 1900 World's Fair was being planned, Mucha was asked by a government representative sent from Vienna to prepare . . . this poster." (Rennert/Weill p. 248) The result is both an allegorical andarchitectural image depicting Austria's presence at the 1900 World's Fair in Paris; in shades of brown, red, gilt and green. Allegoricallythe image illustrates "Paris revealing Austria to the world," (ibid. in the form of a young woman being unveiled by the youth behind her.Architecturally there are images of different structures housing the Austrian exhibits at the Fair.
