Folio-format manuscript on paper containing 2 full-page miniatures painted in vibrant colors and highlighted with gold, the first featuring the Virgin Mary with the Christ child levitating above the kneeling and praying Spanish sovereigns Philip II of Spain (1556-1598) and his daughter and heir Isabella Clara Eugenia (1566-1633), notable for her fair hair (at this period, all of Philip's wives were dead), the images surrounded by small panels depicting the four evangelists and other religious scenes, along with flowers and birds; the second painting, titled, "Por la Gra[ci]a a Dios," shows a crusader on a white horse beheading his Middle Eastern enemies in the top panel, with the family shield painted below flanked by mermaid creatures; all within a fantastic border of flowers, mirrors, soldiers, fruit, and geometric designs, with an herbaceous lion's head at the foot; the 2 full-paged paintings separated by a scarlet silk flyleaf; the text consisting of 54 parchment leaves inscribed in brown ink in a court hand; with large initials with brightly painted borders highlighted in gilt, and a 10-line portrait of a soldier in a suit of armor identified with the initials FP, also protected with a red silk flyleaf; the manuscript disbound; 12 x 8 1/2 in.
