(PATTERN-MAKERS.) Brown, Edward S. Archive of 4 letters by a pattern-maker to his father. 8 pages on 5 leaves with cancelled envelopes; no notable condition issues. Allegheny, PA, 1890-94

  • Notes: Edward S. Brown (1864-ca.1905) was a journeyman pattern-maker in what is now Pittsburgh. Writing to his father Stephen S. Brown (1836-ca.1897) across the state in Lehigh County, he reflects upon the uncertainty of his industry. Discussing layoffs in 1891, he writes "They shut down the shops last Thursday till Monday. It is that labor question that will be settled in May I think that is the cause of the whole affair." In 1894 he complained, "One strike after the other, some one ought to steal some of these tyrants and give them bread and water for a while and see how they like it. . . . If they don't get some work soon and get the drawing in the shop we will all get it in the neck for there is nothing in just now. The only hope I have is that all the men in the drawing room are still at work now."
