[Mexico], 21 August 1916

  • Notes: "We had a big review of the troops here to day it was very impressive and the horses looked fine. We all hope to get out soon though none of us dares guess.
"Gen. P[ershing] and I went hunting the other day and he got a shot at an Antelope. Pershing took the Ante back and he really walked me to death he is very proud of his walking and we did five miles in fifty minutes which is going some.
"I have to help the Chief of Staff inspect all the horses have about 2500 beginning in the morning . . . .
"Make Pa work like Hell for the senate he has got to get in whether Wilson does or not. . . ."
His father, George S. Patton II (1856-1927) ran as the Democratic nominee for Senate in California in 1916, but was roundly defeated by the Republican, Hiram Johnson. The younger George had already made a name for himself in Mexico when he led the first motorized vehicle attack against the ranch of a prominent Villista leader on May 14, 1916.
