PAUL COLIN (1892-1986) MARGUERITE JAMOIS. 1930.
61 3/4x46 1/4 inches. Chachoin, Paris.
Condition B: reatored losses in margins; repaired tears and creases in margins and image; overpainting along vertical and horizontal folds.
Paul Colin's stylistic device of focusing only on close-ups of comedians' and actors' faces began in 1928 with his work for Sylvie (see Swann, Chassaing Collection, catalogue 1978, lot 35). As with all of his posters in this style, the background is carefully divided into geometric partitions, the portrait is simple, and the face is placed within a frame to concentrate viewer's attention on the subject. Marguerite Jamois (1901-1964) was a successful actress whom Colin knew very well, as she played the role of Maya in the 1927 play for which Colin designed one of his most famous posters. Colin no. 78, p. 74.
