Paul Colin 1892-1986 Maya. 1927 62.5 x 46.75 inches. H. Chachoin, Paris. Condition B-: duct tape around edges,. restored losses, repaired tears and restoration in upper right corner, affecting text, vertical and horizontal folds. After becoming instantly famous for his 1925 poster for the Revue Negre, Paul Colin continued designing posters for the Theatre des Champs Elysees. Maya was the title character of a play concerning a prostitute from Marseilles; the play was a hit worldwide except in New York where it was judged as immoral and was censored. Colin's layout for the poster can be seen as a literalization of certain themes in the play: for example, the division of the image into two sides as indicating Maya's double lifeand the three sketches of her as symbolizing the many facets of her troubled and complicated character. A strong, stylized image, with subtle coloring except for the dramatic red used for her coat and thetitle. One of the most famous and rare Colin posters. ref Paul Colin Affichistes by Weill/Rennert, Denoel, Paris, 1989 - p. 29 full color.E3000-4000
