PAUL NEU (1881-1940) DIE AUSSTELLUNG ELEKTRIZITAT. 1911.
38 3/4x28 1/4 inches. Kunstanstalt Graphia, Munich.
Condition B+: minor repaired tears in margins; vertical and horizontal folds; paper skinning at top and bottom margins.
Allegorically representing electricity as a Colossus is very typical of the German academic way of thinking. This poster, however, in its formal treatment, has nothing else to do with academism. The gigantic body in shades of blue, the gray background and the black monuments of Munich are treated in a very bold, modern style. The is the best poster designed by Neu, who not surprisingly, became a member of the "Werkbund".
ref: The Poster, Takashimaya Art Gallery, Tokyo 1985 no. 129 p.79, color.
