  • Notes:
The bridges spanning the Seine in Paris were a constant inspiration for Paul Signac, and in 1911 Berheim-Jeune exhibited sixty-six of Signac's watercolors in "Le Ponts de Paris". This exhibition was noted by the poet and art critic Guillaume Apollinaire, who declared in L'Intransigeant of January 1911, "After all, are the Seine and its bridges not the most beautiful things in Paris?"
Pont Royal-Matin lilas, with its expressive mosaic of brushstrokes, is characteristic of Signac's mature work. In his paintings on canvas from this period, Signac often left the priming visible around individual brushstrokes, a practice also apparent in Pont Royal-Matin lilas.
