PEABODY, GEORGE. Two Autograph Letters Signed. The first, to George Corbin Washington ("Dear Sir"), reporting that he had returned the contract he sent because he "would not sign any contract for the payment of money in the United States while as at present, it is my intention to reside in this country." 1 page, 4to, with integral address leaf; faint uneven toning on first page, folds. The second, "GPeabody," to Samuel Wetmore ("My dear Wetmore"), reporting his success selling US stocks, sending a letter [not present] for Madam from Herman, inquiring whether he will be going to Italy or returning to London, and, in a postscript: "How does Willey get on in his French!" "Hibernia," 3 Feb[ruar]y 1844; London, 9 March [18]50

  • Notes: 3 Feb[ruar]y 1844: "I returned thro' Peabody, Riggs & Co by last Steamer, the papers which you enclosed to me under date 25 November as I could not consistently sign such an obligation . . . .
    "Mr. Riggs is fully acquainted with my views & wishes on the subject, and I trust . . . some arrangement has been made satisfactory to both."
    9 March [18]50: "My letters from the United States have all that I could wish--I have got all the Stocks I ordered among which was 350 U S Co. which have advanced and I am selling at 3 pCt profit. . . ."
