PEDRERO PARA GANAR LA GUERRA AYUDAD A MADRID. Circa 1939.
39 1/2x27 3/4 inches. Rivadeneyra, Madrid.
Condition A-: restoration in margins.
During the Spanish Civil War, the Republican's published a large number of propaganda posters, most of them designed by young, leftist artists using a modernistic and graphic vocabulary. With only a small number of exceptions we know nothing about these strongly politically-oriented poster artists. The majority of them disappeared after the Fascist victory. A few posters are known by Pedrero, at least one of which features similar toy-looking vehicles. Here, trucks and trains are stylized in a neo-cubist fashion, pushed by hands eager to rush help to Madrid, the last stronghold of the Republicans.
ref: The Palette and the Flame, NY 1979, International Publishers. p. 28.
